Who has peptic ulcer disease and why?

An ulcer of the stomach and duodenum occurs at any age, but the age of 30–40 years is her favorite. As we have already said, men are sick 6–7 times more often than women (especially duodenal ulcer). So a typical ulcer is either a freshly baked student who suddenly “waved” up to two meters, or a manager, a “workaholic” who decided to relieve work stress in a “relaxed” setting, such as a bathhouse. Unfortunately, many simply don’t know how to behave in a bathhouse in order to get a healing effect, and not vice versa.

The difficulty in treating peptic ulcer, as well as preventing relapse, is due to the fact that many different factors lead to the occurrence of peptic ulcer. For someone, one thing is important, for another patient – completely different.

The most important among the factors leading to the development of ulcers is the hereditary factor. However, it is not the disease itself that is inherited, but only a predisposition to it.

The genetic factors that contribute to the occurrence of peptic ulcer are established:

  • a) a hereditary increase in the number of cells producing hydrochloric acid and an upset gastrointestinal motility can lead to damage to the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum;
  • b) congenital deficiency of mucus production, insufficient synthesis of specific protective factors (immunoglobulins and prostaglandins);
  • c) blood type 0 (1), positive Rh factor.

True, it is not necessary at all that the child will have an ulcer if one of the parents has an ulcer. Hereditary predisposition is realized with a combination of adverse factors.

Proven factors are:

1.Psycho-emotional overload, violation of work and rest. Most scientists believe that the main trigger in the occurrence of peptic ulcer are neuropsychiatric disorders. They arise due to negative emotions, mental and emotional overload. Stress leads to dysfunction of the parasympathetic nervous system. At the same time, the activity of the main parasympathetic nerve, the vagus, or vagus, is enhanced. An increase in the activity of the vagus leads to stomach cramping, impaired circulation in the mucosa, which leads to self-repetition of the inner lining of the stomach. Anxiety, depression, general exhaustion lead to similar consequences.

2.Many scientists consider peptic ulcer as a special case of a pathological (perverted) reaction of the body to stress. There is even a special term – “stress ulcer”, that is, an acute ulcer that occurs as a result of various stressful situations. There are cases when, under the influence of adverse factors, gastric juice corroded the gastric mucosa in just a few hours, forming large ulcerative defects. So getting to the hospital on the eve of passing a diploma or a serious interview is not such a rare case in medical practice.

3.Bad habits (smoking, alcohol abuse). Nicotine enhances the production of hydrochloric acid, interferes with the normal digestion of food, damages the wall of the stomach, and also disrupts the production of protective factors for the gastric mucosa in the pancreas. Alcohol also enhances the aggressive properties of gastric juice and reduces the protective properties of the mucous membrane. Therefore, such pre-ulcerated conditions as gastritis and duodenitis are frequent companions of alcohol lovers.

4.Errors in nutrition (irregular eating, eating foods with a high content of artificial colors, preservatives and flavorings).

So, in broth cubes an extremely aggressive agent for the gastric mucosa is included – tartrazinic acid. Caffeine in coffee also enhances the secretion of hydrochloric acid. Spicy salads, mayonnaise, which have become an integral attribute of “dinners” for many people, also provoke the development of gastritis and ulcers. Of course, eating salads seasoned with mayonnaise alone will not lead to ulcers. However, under the influence of stress, lunch at work may well end with a visit to the surgeon. Of course, this does not mean that salads or bouillon cubes are unhealthy. Moreover, in 9 out of 10 people they will not cause any other sensations, except a feeling of satiety. Unfortunately, the stomach of this tenth person, predisposed to an ulcer, will not accept these very goodies and will require milk and semolina from the owner for a long time.

5.Taking drugs of the aspirin group, glucocorticoid hormones. Drugs with a potential “ulcerogenic”, ulcer-producing effect should be used exclusively under medical supervision and together with prophylactic agents. At least after eating. Unfortunately (or fortunately), aspirin has taken a very strong place in our home medicine chests.

Concluding the story about the “harmfulness of life”, imagine a certain person who has earned or “tormented” by life, relaxing in a soft chair – an aspirin tablet “off his head”, a glass of cognac, a cup of coffee, a cigarette … Beauty! You still have questions, how does an ulcer arise?
