Lazy bowel syndrome

Constipation is a common problem that worries many modern people. They can be periodic or chronic, but always cause a lot of inconvenience and discomfort. Therefore, people take laxatives to get rid of them, often without a doctor’s prescription. Indeed, there are many of them on sale now, and they are available without a prescription. But such self-medication leads to even greater progression of the pathology, since the intestine simply refuses to work. In this case, constipation becomes permanent, painful. This condition is characterized as a “lazy intestine.”

Most often, such a diagnosis is made to older people, whose peristalsis slows down due to natural age-related changes. But recently, a similar pathology has been increasingly diagnosed at a younger age, even in children.

Cause

Constipation is a symptom of many diseases of the digestive system. These can be chronic inflammatory diseases of the liver and gall bladder, biliary dyskinesia, pancreatitis, atrophic gastritis, dysbiosis, irritable bowel syndrome. But even with these pathologies, constipation occurs periodically during periods of exacerbation and may disappear during remission.

But in some people, the intestines stop working for other reasons. Most often, elderly patients are familiar with this problem – somewhere after 40 years. Their peristalsis is slowed down due to the natural processes of aging, weakening of muscle tone and atrophy of nerve endings. Sometimes lazy bowel syndrome also occurs at a younger age.

The reason for this may be different factors:

  • With a sedentary lifestyle, the work of the smooth muscles of the intestine, which is responsible for the movement of feces, is disrupted.
  • Irregular unbalanced nutrition, dry food, a small amount of fiber in food – all this leads to constipation. The cause of this condition can also be the frequent use of bakery products, rice, canned food, sausages, cheese, milk.
  • Inadequate consumption of pure water leads to the fact that the stool becomes too hard, which makes it difficult for them to move through the intestines. Coffee, tea, juices and carbonated drinks will not help to rectify the situation, but often, on the contrary, lead to even greater dehydration.
  • Overweight or chronic endocrine diseases in many people cause constipation.
  • Cracks in the anus, hemorrhoids. In this case, a person postpones defecation due to fear of pain.
  • Fecal masses are becoming more solid, their stagnation leads to fermentation, infection and inflammation of the mucosa is possible.
  • Random intake of various drugs without a doctor’s prescription. Most often, constipation can occur after frequent use of sorbents based on magnesium or aluminum, iron preparations or antibiotics. The uncontrolled intake of laxatives also causes a similar problem.
  • Frequent stresses, nervous shocks, experiences, increased mental stress cause smooth muscle spasm and impaired blood supply to the intestines. This can also lead to constipation.

In addition, the intestines can become lazy in a healthy person who eats properly, but leads a sedentary lifestyle. If a person works in adverse conditions, when there is no time to go to the toilet, and also if he lives in a place where there is no toilet close to him, he may have difficulty with bowel movements over time.

Symptoms

Lazy intestine syndrome is diagnosed in a person if bowel movements constantly occur less frequently than expected. In a healthy person, the intestines are emptied every day, in extreme cases – every 2 days. This is also possible if it does not cause inconvenience. But sometimes the intestines do not empty on time, and constipation occurs. When this happens all the time and causes serious inconvenience to the patient, doctors say that he has a lazy or sluggish intestine.

This is not a disease, but a complex of symptoms that often accompany other diseases of the digestive tract. You can talk about the presence of lazy bowel syndrome if a person has at least a few of these signs:

  • constant or periodic constipation, observed for at least 3 months;
  • a feeling of fullness of the intestines;
  • flatulence, increased flatulence, bloating;
  • bad breath;
  • dry mucous membranes, constant thirst;
  • loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort;
  • weakness, drowsiness, and other symptoms of intoxication;
  • deterioration of the skin, hair loss;
  • headaches, irritability, mood swings.

Nutrition

A person who has constant difficulties with bowel movements, it is necessary first of all to pay attention to his diet. After all, it is an unbalanced diet and food “on the go” that leads to constipation. This happens mainly in those people who eat large quantities of rice, pastries, white bread, confectionery, chocolate, convenience foods, canned food, who eat sandwiches in a cafe or dry. Such nutrition leads to a slowdown of intestinal motility. Food is digested for a long time, slowly moving along the digestive tract.

Therefore, to make the lazy intestines work, you need to give up such food. In addition, it is important to include more raw vegetables and fruits in the diet. They contain a large amount of fiber, which enhances intestinal motility and acts on it as a mild laxative.

Be sure to eat such food:

  • beets and carrots in the form of salads or juices;
  • fresh herbs, sea kale;
  • dried fruits – dried apricots, prunes, figs;
  • fresh fruits and berries, especially plums;
  • pumpkin, cabbage;
  • wheat or oat bran;
  • sunflower seeds, flax, nuts;
  • fermented milk drinks without flavoring additives;
  • honey;
  • unrefined vegetable oil.

It is very important to drink enough fluids. Moreover, coffee, tea, purchased juices are not considered, as they can lead to even greater losses of water. For normal bowel function, you need to drink at least 2 liters of pure water per day. It is recommended to drink a glass in the morning on an empty stomach and 30 minutes before each meal, as well as during the day when thirst occurs.
