Rotavirus infection is a common viral disease called intestinal flu that affects the digestive tract. The causative agent of the infection is rotavirus. Most often, the disease affects children whose age does not exceed 5 years, who have physiological characteristics of the digestive system and an incompletely formed immune system.

In the acute period of the disease and after it, it is necessary to adhere to some rules that will be aimed at restoring the gastrointestinal tract. What diet should be followed after rotavirus infection? Consider all its features.

What happens to the digestive tract?

After the virus has entered the body and reached the small intestine, it may not manifest itself for another 1–5 days. Moreover, the patient is already contagious to others and will be the carrier until the last day of full recovery.

Then it begins to multiply actively, causing many serious symptoms. Once inside the enterocytes, they begin to destroy them. As a result, defective cells that do not have the ability to absorb, break down and synthesize enzymes come to replace normal cells.

In order to better tolerate the disease, it is necessary to adhere to a certain order:

  • reduce the load on the digestive tract;
  • it is necessary to provide the body with micro and macro elements;
  • prevent loss of fluid and body weight;
  • reduce the inflammatory process in the digestive tract;
  • normalize the work of all digestive organs.

The basic rules of the diet for rotavirus infection in adults and children:

  • food should be varied and easily digestible, taken at least 5-7 times a day;
  • the recommended temperature of the finished products should not be lower than 30 and not higher than 38 degrees;
  • the total daily diet should be reduced by 20-50% of the physiological norm;
  • providing the body with enough protein, carbohydrates and fats;

  • include fermented milk products rich in lactobacilli in the diet.

After a child or an adult has contracted intestinal flu, the question arises: “What can I eat in order not to harm the body?” Specialists have identified certain products that favorably affect inflamed organs and those that can do even more harm.

Allowed foods and dishes:

  • Sour-milk products from 3 days.
  • Lean meats.
  • Boiled or baked fruits and vegetables.
  • Cereals: rice, semolina, buckwheat, oatmeal.
  • Rusks from bread, biscuit cookies, drying.
  • Soups on vegetable or diluted meat broth.
  • Soft-boiled eggs or steamed omelettes.

Sample menu for a week in the acute period

After the first signs of intestinal flu appeared, you should pay attention to what you can eat and what you can not. The first 2 weeks, it is necessary to strictly observe the diet, which will spare the digestive tract.

The diet can be expanded only taking into account the patient’s normal health and the permission of a specialist.

1 day: in the morning juice without sugar, at lunch, mashed noodle soup on vegetable broth, snack cracker, broth from rose hips, dinner mashed potatoes without milk and butter, rice broth at night.

2 day: in the morning steamed omelet, lunch rice soup on diluted chicken broth, decoction of berries without sugar, afternoon baked apples in the oven, buckwheat dinner and a half steam cutlet.

3 day: soft-boiled egg, biscuit cookies, weak tea, buckwheat soup on a weak meat broth, potato casserole, souffle from fruits, dinner rice with a piece of boiled fish, a glass of low-fat kefir for the night.

4th day: oatmeal porridge on the water, diluted cocoa drink, meatball soup, pasta from durum wheat, juice afternoon snack, vegetable stew dinner with a slice of baked chicken, yogurt for the night.

Day 5: buckwheat porridge infused with kefir, crackers or dried cookies, lunch rice soup, mashed potatoes with meatballs, dried fruit compote, baked sweet apple without sugar, casserole with pasta.

Day 6: 2 soft-boiled eggs, a sandwich with butter and a slice of cheese, weak tea, meat soup, buckwheat and a slice of boiled chicken, stewed fruit, rice with a steam cutlet for dinner, fruit souffle, a glass of kefir for the night.

Day 7: oatmeal in diluted milk, a cocoa drink and a cheese sandwich, lunch soup with meatballs, pasta with a steam patty, tea with honey, fruit soufflé, mashed potato with baked fish.
