Stomach acidity

Stomach acidity is an indicator of the production of hydrochloric acid in this organ, which is measured in special units (pH). Any deviation from the norm is a predisposing factor for the development of gastroenterological diseases. To establish accurately, increased or decreased acidity in the stomach, can only be a qualified medical specialist, in this case, a gastroenterologist. However, you can carry out an approximate determination of acidity in the stomach at home, through special measures and monitoring the work of your body. Separately, it should be said that only a gastroenterologist knows how to normalize the acidity of the stomach, so self-medication should not be carried out.

Hydrochloric acid function

The acidity of the gastric juice depends on the production of hydrochloric acid. It is this substance that helps to properly digest food, performs a bactericidal and antiseptic function. Therefore, with deviations from the norm, pathological processes begin in the gastrointestinal tract.

The neutral value of gastric acidity is 7.0 units. A reading above this threshold indicates that an alkaline environment is present, and below the norm indicates an acidic environment.

Reduced acidity

At home, it is possible to determine that low acidity is present by the following clinical signs:

food is absorbed by the stomach very slowly, which provokes a pulling, aching pain in the stomach; burp with a smell of rot or rotten eggs; metallic taste in the mouth; frequent violations of stool frequency – prolonged constipation alternates with bouts of diarrhea; increased flatulence; brittle nails, hair, too dry skin.

The presence of such signs will indicate that a person has low stomach acidity.

Increased acidity

Previously, you can independently determine that a person has an increased acidity of the stomach, according to the following clinical signs:

frequent constipation, bouts of intestinal colic; “Hungry pains” – this type of pain syndrome is characterized by the fact that it occurs on an empty stomach or with long breaks between meals; sour or bitter belching, which is most often observed only after eating; the tongue can be coated with white or gray bloom.

It should be noted that with increased acidity of the stomach, heartburn can also occur, however, in this case, this is not a defining symptom.

Determination of acidity at home

You can determine the acidity of the stomach at home as follows:

the use of lemon – if a person has an increased acidity of the stomach, then the fruit will seem too sour, people with low acidity of the stomach do not notice this factor; baking soda – dilute half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water and drink on an empty stomach. If after this there is no belching, then, probably, the person has low acidity; eating apple juice on an empty stomach – with increased acidity, there will be discomfort in the stomach. If there is no such reaction, then the acidity is normal.

It should be understood that the acid level in the stomach is only measured in this way. Determine these indicators accurately, only a doctor can, by conducting a physical examination and special laboratory and instrumental examination methods.

Acidity normalization methods

Medication will include appropriate medications. The duration, regimen and dosage are determined only by the doctor.

A diet with increased acidity of the stomach implies the exclusion of such foods from the diet:

mushrooms, legumes; citrus; radish, garlic, onion, sorrel; sour berries, fruits; sauces and marinades; strong tea and coffee, carbonated and alcoholic drinks.

As a rule, with the elimination of these products from the diet and adherence to the prescribed drug therapy, it is possible to normalize the acidity in the stomach.

With low acidity, the following foods should be removed from the diet:

foods that cause stomach fermentation; fatty and fried; flour products, especially fresh baked goods; alcohol.

In this case, it is possible to normalize acidity if you daily consume a moderate amount of juices from sour berries and fruits, the same fresh products.

In general, you need to understand that any therapeutic measures without an accurate diagnosis and doctor’s prescriptions can only harm. The use of traditional medicine, in this case, is not excluded, but also only after the approval of the attending physician.

It is possible to achieve a constant normal value of acidity in the stomach through proper nutrition and timely treatment of all gastroenterological ailments.
